At a Paley Center panel on March 19 moderated by Kyle MacLachlan, Jonathan Nolan said he wants to return to feature screenwriting with a cinematic space opera he has been developing. He began the discussion with a joke about taking "a nap," then explained that the project ties into some unfinished business from his earlier work on Interstellar.

Nolan revealed he once wrote a draft of Interstellar for Steven Spielberg that was twice as long and "totally unfilmable." He said the released movie is "kind of half of what I wrote for Steven," noting Chris Nolan "wisely came in and took to his own ideas," and that the original draft even included aliens.

"It was fun, so there's a little bit of unfinished business for me with that genre," he added, recalling childhood memories of helping his brother make Star Wars movies in their garage.
