Family sues OpenAI over Tumbler Ridge school shooting
Cia Edmonds has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI on behalf of herself and her two daughters, Maya and Dahlia Gebala, who were present during the shooting. The family argues the company could have prevented the attack on a school last month and is seeking undisclosed punitive damages.
Eight people – including five students aged 12 to 13 and a 39-year-old teaching assistant – were killed by an 18-year-old shooter in Tumbler Ridge on 10 February. The shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, who died of a self-inflicted injury, had described violent scenarios involving guns to ChatGPT over several days in June; an automated review system flagged the activity, but OpenAI said it did not identify "credible or imminent planning," banned the account and did not notify Canadian authorities, later finding a second account linked to the shooter.
