The Tomb Raider 1–3 Remastered release has drawn mixed reactions, and a free Steam update has intensified the backlash. Players say the remaster still lacks many of the quality-of-life improvements applied to the later remastered trilogy and that some control changes have made the games harder to handle.

The March 12 patch introduced a new Challenge mode where players can tweak health, damage and enemy numbers. Completing certain challenges unlocks new outfits that grant passive bonuses, but many players have taken issue with the way those costumes look. Critics on Reddit and other platforms described the new skins as unfinished or slapdash, noting fire-damaged shades, wobbly lines and sloppy symbols that prompted speculation about AI involvement.

A YouTuber shared side-by-side comparisons with earlier promoted designs, and a developer who worked on the original remastering publicly clarified that he and his colleagues were not involved in the art direction for this patch. Aspyr Media has not yet responded to the criticism.
