A new live-action Yakuza miniseries has been released unexpectedly, and fans are already favoring it over 2024’s divisive Amazon adaptation. Previously trapped on Japan’s Prime Video without English subtitles, the show is now available on IGN’s YouTube channel.

The series follows Kiryu (Yasufumi Motomiya) as he returns from prison to Kamurocho, where he clashes with Majima (Yoshiyuki Yamaguchi) and one-time friend Nishikiyama (Kazuhiro Nakaya, reprising his game role). Back in the city, Kiryu becomes embroiled in a criminal conspiracy that severs old ties and forges new ones.

Despite a modest budget, the miniseries preserves Yakuza’s tongue-in-cheek humor, even joking about the franchise’s text box dialog scenes. The first episode has drawn positive reaction online, with commenters calling it “10x better than the Amazon version” and a swell of enthusiasm that contrasts with the reception to Amazon’s effort.
