Fans to protest after Chelsea escape points deduction over secret payments
Senior figures from several top-flight clubs have contacted Premier League chief executive Richard Masters and chairwoman Alison Brittain seeking an explanation after Chelsea admitted to £47 million in secret, illicit payments yet avoided a points deduction. Fans are now planning a major protest as executives demand clarity over the league’s decision to impose a £10.75m fine and a one-year transfer ban suspended for two years.
The club’s current US owners self-reported the findings soon after their takeover, having uncovered a report that between 2011 and 2018 Chelsea made at least 36 secret payments through offshore entities linked to former owner Roman Abramovich. Those deals involved players including Eden Hazard, Willian and Cesc Fàbregas.
The Premier League’s ruling notably praised the club’s cooperation and did not reference any “sporting advantage.” Rival clubs and supporters point to a stark contrast with past penalties.
