Fans Return to Sheridan's 1883 and 1923 After Marshals' Tepid Reception
Fans eager to revisit Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone universe had a mixed welcome last week when the new spin-off Marshals premiered on March 1. The show drew middling reviews and stands as the lowest-rated installment of the franchise on Rotten Tomatoes. The day after Marshals debuted, Sheridan's earlier prequels 1883 and 1923 climbed the domestic iTunes charts; FlixPatrol data show both series among the most-watched titles.
Written entirely by Sheridan with Ben Richardson as the primary director, the two prequels received strong reviews—1883 holds an 89% “Certified Fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes and 1923 a 94%—and both saw a surge in viewership following the new premiere. 1883, which concluded its single-season run in 2022, follows James Dutton and his family on a perilous westward journey led by a grieving marshal played by Sam Elliott and features Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and Isabel May.
1923 wrapped after two seasons in 2025.
