'Farscape' Ended Abruptly After Season 4, 23 Years Ago
On March 21, 2003, the trailblazing sci‑fi series Farscape came to an unceremonious halt after four seasons. Debuting in 1999, the show produced 88 episodes and starred Ben Browder as John Crichton, blending actors in heavy makeup with Jim Henson Company puppets and a deliberately grittier tone than many space operas.
The Season 4 finale closed on a cliffhanger that clearly pointed toward Season 5. Although Syfy had reportedly ordered Seasons 4 and 5 together, the series was canceled while Season 4 aired. Showrunner Rockne S. O'Bannon called the decision "entirely a business decision," as the Jim Henson Company’s sale to German investors and ensuing legal and budgetary turmoil undercut plans for a fifth season.
Fans rallied, and that campaign helped convince the production to find another path.
