Father of activist Anna Kwok convicted under Hong Kong national security law — World news | The Guardian

A Hong Kong court found Kwok Yin-sang, 68, guilty under Article 23 for attempting to deal with funds or other financial assets belonging to an absconder after trying to end his daughter’s education savings insurance and withdraw HK$88,609. He is the first person charged under the homegrown law for that offence.

Sentencing is expected within a few weeks; the maximum penalty is seven years in jail. Anna Kwok helps lead the Washington-based Hong Kong Democracy Council and is one of 34 overseas activists wanted by Hong Kong national security police, accused of colluding with foreign forces.

A bounty of HK$1m has been offered for her arrest. She said the targeting of her father was an attempt to "drive distance between me and other Hongkongers" and to "weaponise human emotions against me," adding that the government’s retaliation "does not and will not discourage me from my ongoing advocacy and activism." Kwok Yin-sang pleaded not guilty and did not testify.
