The FBI has opened an investigation into a group of suspicious games that were removed from Steam after being found to contain malware. The agency set up a web page focused on the situation and cited several titles seemingly tied to crypto scams, including BlockBlasters, Chemia, Dashverse, Lampy, Lunara, PirateFi, and Tokenova.

Over the last couple of years, Steam has repeatedly been infected with games discovered to contain malware that could disrupt computer function or steal personal information. Many of the offending games initially behaved like normal releases and spanned genres from FPS titles to platformers.

In most cases the malicious software was distributed via in-game patches; at least one early access title asked players to opt into a playtest before injecting dangerous software. Valve moved quickly to remove the offending releases. BlockBlasters, for example, reached a peak of seven concurrent users on SteamDB and has been accused of robbing at least one player of $150,000 in crypto.
