When Peter and David Brewis announced on Facebook that they had formed a tribute to The Doors, some Field Music fans asked why. The Brewis brothers lead a cult indie band with more than a dozen acclaimed albums, and David said playing one show a month as the Doors would “fill a hole in our dire finances.” Faced with meagre streaming fees and rising touring costs, the band said even established musicians now need “portfolio careers.” Members already balance other work: Andrew Moore is employed by a food manufacturer, Peter teaches three days a week as a music lecturer, and David helps out at a nonprofit for young musicians.

In earlier interviews the brothers described doing their own accounts and staying in hostels while touring to save money. The side project, jokingly named the Fire Doors, began as a joke and then became real. David researched the tribute circuit, took the frontman role and bought fake leather pants to evoke Jim Morrison.
