Figure skating at 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics: events and rules
Figure skating remains one of the most-watched Winter Olympic sports, blending athleticism and artistry into routines that showcase each skater’s personality and skill. Stars such as Ilia Malinin, Sakamoto Kaori and the U.S. duo Madison Chock and Evan Bates are among those competing at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games.
Five medal events make up the Olympic figure skating program: men’s singles, women’s singles, pairs, ice dance and the team event. Singles feature individual routines with jumps and choreography; pairs emphasize synchronized jumps, throws and overhead lifts; ice dance focuses more on choreography, step sequences and “twizzles.” The team event comprises eight segments — men’s short, men’s free, women’s short, women’s free, pairs short, pairs free, ice dance rhythm dance and ice dance free dance — with points from each segment combined for a final team score.
Scoring uses the International Judging System, which divides responsibility between a technical panel and a judges’ panel.
