Finalissima between Spain and Argentina cancelled, UEFA explains
UEFA said it explored every viable alternative to save the Finalissima between Spain and Argentina, but each option proved unworkable for the AFA. The first proposal was to stage the match at the Santiago Bernabéu on the scheduled date with supporters split equally in the stadium; Argentina refused.
A second option would have been a two-legged tie, with the Bernabéu on 27 March and a return in Buenos Aires during an international window before Euro 2028 and the Copa América, again offering a 50:50 split for fans in Madrid. That was rejected. UEFA also asked whether a neutral venue in Europe could host the match on 27 or 30 March, but this proposal was likewise refused.
Argentina made a counter-proposal to play after the World Cup, but Spain had no dates available, and although Argentina later declared its willingness to play on 31 March, that date proved unfeasible. Consequently, UEFA said this edition of the Finalissima has been cancelled.
