When Nathan Fillion and the cast teased a Firefly revival, many hoped for a direct sequel to the 2005 Serenity movie. Instead the plan is an animated series set between the original show and the film: practical, but underwhelming. Serenity ends on a note that feels like a new beginning—Mal and the crew expose the truth about Miranda and the Reavers, the survivors repair Serenity, River takes the pilot’s seat and the ship lifts off—so a midquel treads familiar ground where we already know the endgame.

The choice is easy to justify. Animation lets the series bring back Hoban “Wash” Washburne and avoid recasting or aging issues for the remaining actors; Shepherd Book can be voiced by a new actor after Ron Glass’s death in 2016; and producing sci‑fi in animation is less costly than live action.
