Firefly cast reacts to planned animated revival

At a reunion panel hosted by Maggie Lovitt at Awesome Con, members of the Firefly cast — Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher and Summer Glau — announced plans for a new animated series meant to pick up where Joss Whedon left off before the feature Serenity.

Though still in development, the news drew relief from the actors and excitement from long‑time fans who have kept the show alive in the years since its early cancellation. New showrunners Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters are attached, and the project has Whedon’s blessing.

Tudyk pointed to the devoted fandom for the series’ endurance, arguing the show was at its best on television and was cut off too soon; he said returning in animated form would allow many of the imagined adventures fans have long discussed to finally be realized.
