Firefly returns as an animated series with Joss Whedon's blessing
At Awesome Con on Sunday, March 15, Nathan Fillion announced a new season of Firefly that will return as an animated series set between the end of the original show and the film Serenity. He was joined onstage by Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau; Adam Baldwin was not present but will voice his character.
Fillion also shared concept art from animation studio ShadowMachine, published online as a Deadline exclusive. In an Instagram video Fillion reconfirmed details: the revival already has a script and two showrunners, Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters. The pair are married and, Fillion said, first met "through Firefly." The project has the approval of 20th Century Studios and its current owner, Disney, and Fillion said he has the approval of Firefly's creator, Joss Whedon.
