Firefly surges on streaming as animated revival advances
Firefly has returned to streaming charts as viewers revisit the complete 14-episode run ahead of a newly announced revival. Renewed interest pushed the show to No. 3 on Amazon Prime Video and No. 7 on the Apple TV store, and it reached the top 10 in markets such as the UK and Germany.
Several cast members reunited at Awesome Con, where Nathan Fillion revealed that an animated revival is officially in development. The panel included Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher and Summer Glau, and was moderated by Maggie Lovitt.
Fans have been rewatching the original series and buying episodes on digital storefronts. The revival will proceed without original creator Joss Whedon and will be led by co-showrunners Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters. Tentatively titled Firefly: Still Flyin’, the project is said to have been in development for five years and aims to bring back the core cast in voice roles to continue the story from where the series left off, bridging toward the film Serenity.
