Their train also carries the surviving family members of victims from an explosion Song failed to prevent three years earlier, and the film leans on taut editing and smash cuts to sustain tension. Herman Yau’s Customs Frontline centers on customs officer Chow Ching-lai (Nicholas Tse), who tries to stop shipments of illegal weapons bound for the imagined Republic of Loklamoa in exchange for diamonds and ivory.

Facing a syndicate that includes Dr. Raw (Amanda Strang) and seeking to clear his superior Mr. Cheung (Jacky Cheung), Chow’s globe-trotting investigation yields elaborate setpieces, from a multi-boat raid on a shipping vessel to a final tussle on a mini-submarine.
