Pokemon Sword and Shield marked the series' first mainline release on a home console, arriving on the hybrid Nintendo Switch and bridging Nintendo's home and portable lines. Many of the eighth generation's changes reflect that shift between play styles. The Wild Area represented a major departure from traditional routes by opening up a vast stretch of land to explore.

It hosts a wide variety of Pokemon, some initially too high-leveled but useful later for building and improving your team. Sword & Shield introduced Dynamax, letting any Pokemon temporarily grow in size and stats, while a handful of species can Gigantamax and gain access to exclusive G‑Moves.

The move to the Switch also brought Max Raid Battles to the Wild Area, enabling teams of four to challenge a Dynamaxed Pokemon and offering co‑operative encounters. Gym Leaders and Badge collecting returned for the console debut, but Gym Challenges borrowed elements from Sun & Moon's Island Trials.
