Five Years In The PS5 Is Still Kicking Everyone’s Ass
Five years on, the PlayStation 5 remains a strong seller. The PS5 moved 8 million units last quarter, outpacing the Switch 2’s 7 million; Sony leaned on steep holiday discounts—$400 for the PS5 Digital versus $450 for the Switch 2—though Nintendo sold an additional 1.3 million original Switch units, bringing its combined total to 8.3 million and still edging out PlayStation overall.
Sony is stockpiling memory amid a computing component shortage to try to repeat holiday sales success in 2026. “As for securing a supply of memory, we are already in a position to secure the minimum quantity necessary to manage the year-end selling season of next fiscal year,” CFO Lin Tao said.
“Going forward, we intend to further negotiate with various suppliers to secure enough supply to meet the demand of our customers.
