Five Years Later, Tom Hanks’ Finch Remains a Late-Night Favorite
Tom Hanks starred five years ago in the Apple TV straight-to-streaming sci-fi film Finch, set on a post-apocalyptic version of Earth. In the story, a robot built by his creator to protect the life of his beloved dog learns what it’s like to be human through the values of friendship and love.
Finch met with a mostly positive reception from both critics and audiences, holding marks of 74% and 68% on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. The script was written by Craig Luc and Ivor Powell and the film was directed by Miguel Sapochnik. Hanks had worked with Apple TV the year before Finch, starring in Greyhound, a WWII film about an inexperienced submarine commander who must lead his crew against a deadly German submarine wolf pack.
Greyhound became one of the most-watched Apple TV movies of all time, and the streamer even greenlit a sequel, which is now in production overseas; Greyhound 2 returned Hanks and his co-star Stephen Graham and is expected to continue filming throughout the year, likely releasing to Apple TV sometime next year.
