Darren Fletcher says 15-year-old JJ Gabriel will not be fast-tracked into Manchester United first team
Goal reports on Jan 11, 2026 that Darren Fletcher has explained why 15-year-old JJ Gabriel, though eligible for FA Cup selection, will not be fast-tracked into Manchester United’s first-team squad for their third-round tie with Brighton.
Gabriel has been playing up with United’s U18s this season, registering 11 goals in 14 appearances after being bumped up into that age group. While his age rules him out of Premier League action, the FA Cup uses different eligibility rules and Gabriel has trained with the first team this season and "is expected to make his competitive bow in the not too distant future," according to the report.
Fletcher, who has worked with Gabriel at U18 level, said the youngster has "a massive sort of hype" and praised his love of the game, but added that "for just now, it's a little bit early (to put him in the first team) I think." Gabriel became the youngest player to represent United in the FA Youth Cup, scoring the winner in a 1-0 win over Peterborough at Old Trafford in December 2025, and it has been suggested he "could go on to become the club’s youngest debutant" with the path to a Premier League bow "set to be cleared in 2026-27."
