Liverpool were forced to make a last-minute change at the City Ground when summer signing Florian Wirtz, who had been named in the starting XI, dropped out after sustaining an injury in the warm-up. Curtis Jones was called into the team to take over from the Germany international.

Wirtz had been coming into form at Anfield after his summer move, scoring five of his six goals for the Reds since the turn of the year and not missing a game for the club since the reverse fixture against Forest in November. Manager Arne Slot has highlighted the midfielder's tactical progress, saying Wirtz arrived with world-class technical ability but has made real gains in his understanding of the game without the ball.

"Off the ball is where I see the biggest improvement with him, and some others, and that combination makes you ready for the Premier League," Slot added.
