A lawsuit over cuts to the National Endowment for the Humanities produced depositions that provide an inside look at DOGE, the government agency formerly led by Elon Musk. In May of last year the American Council of Learned Societies, the American Historical Association and the Modern Language Association sued to reverse DOGE's cuts, which eliminated entire divisions, programs and grants.

Two DOGE employees, Justin Fox and Nate Cavanaugh, were deposed and videos of their hours-long testimony have been uploaded to YouTube. Fox and Cavanaugh described using ChatGPT to determine what to cut. DOGE regularly used the prompt "Does the following relate at all to DEI?" and asked the chatbot for a "yes" or "no" answer with an explanation shorter than 120 characters.
