Two former developers of EVE Online have spent more than a decade at Klang Games building Seed, a society simulation MMO in which not only the world but individual characters—Seedlings—remain active after players log off. Klang Games showed a new trailer at GDC’s Future Games Show that uses a song by Björk and outlined the current state of the project.

Societies form the backbone of Seed. Players can act as lawmakers, business owners or resource gatherers, shaping taxes, rules and even the physical details of characters and homes. Big societies could become sprawling, player-run megalopolises managed by thousands of Seedlings, while smaller groups might form hamlets focused on crafting and simple survival.

Accounts may hold multiple Seedlings, each living in different societies with their own lives and jobs.
