I like to grumble about Fortnite—vaulted shockwave grenades, disappointing SMGs, baffling off-brand weapons—so it's worth crediting Epic Games here. Through careful buffs and the return of older guns, the developer has assembled one of the best loot pools in ages.

A month ago the Deadeye AR dominated the map, SMGs were largely irrelevant, and the lone sniper only worked as a third weapon alongside a Deadeye and a shotgun. The biggest change is to SMGs. Epic removed the Dual Micro SMGs and doubled down on the Holo and Flex, increasing damage and magazine size.

The Holo’s optic finally helps it live up to its potential as a stable, high-damage full-auto for short-to-medium ranges—the writer notes its 200 damage-per-second can shred unaware opponents. The Flex is more versatile: deadly in hipfire against builds, with a right-click that trades fire rate for accuracy and damage, and a larger magazine that can theoretically sustain more than 200 DPS for over four seconds.
