Cristian Romero will miss four games after being sent off in Tottenham’s 2–0 defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday. He was issued a straight red by Michael Oliver on 29 minutes for a stamp on Casemiro’s left ankle, and the suspension keeps him out until 15 March, ruling him out of matches against Newcastle, Arsenal, Fulham and Crystal Palace.

It was Romero’s second red card in 10 matches and his fourth ban this season; he has now received six red cards in all competitions since making his Spurs debut in August 2021, the most of any Premier League player in that period. Off the field his conduct has been a source of concern.

After the 2-2 draw with Manchester City he described the squad as “disgraceful”, and following the Bournemouth defeat he posted: “They only show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies,” later deleting the reference to lies.
