From Björk’s swan dress to Céline’s back-to-front tux

At the 2001 Oscars, Gladiator won best picture and Russell Crowe took best actor, but the red carpet produced the moment everyone remembers: Björk in the swan dress. Made by Macedonian designer Marjan Pejoski, the tutu skirt with a swan draped around her neck and egg accessories was widely panned — TV critic Steven Cojocaru called it “one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen.” A quarter of a century on, the outfit has its own Wikipedia page and has inspired tributes from RuPaul’s Drag Race to Rosalía.
