Gabbard’s 2020 Election Claims Put Her Back in Favor With Trump
In late January, Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, was leading a Situation Room meeting on Syria when President Trump abruptly shifted her assignment: he ordered her to help oversee an F.B.I. investigation of his baseless claims of irregularities in the 2020 vote.
Days later Ms. Gabbard appeared at a warehouse in Fulton County, Ga., where ballots from the 2020 vote were stored. As the F.B.I. conducted a raid she observed and oversaw their work, then met with agents and put the president on speaker phone. Most presidents keep an arm’s distance from investigations, and the president’s direct involvement and her presence at the search could raise questions about vindictive prosecutions and complicate future court cases.
As director of national intelligence, Ms. Gabbard coordinates the nation’s spy agencies and presidential briefings.
