‘Galileo’ Musical, Starring Raúl Esparza, Will Open on Broadway
“Galileo,” a new pop-rock musical about the Italian scientist Galileo Galilei, will begin performances on Nov. 10 and open on Dec. 6 at the Shubert Theater, with Raúl Esparza in the title role. The production follows the scientist’s heretic-to-visionary story and aims to explore how he changed understanding of humanity’s place in the universe.
Esparza, a four-time Tony nominee, will be joined by Jeremy Kushnier as a Catholic prelate and Joy Woods as Galileo’s daughter. Songs are by Zoe Sarnak and Michael Weiner, the book is by Danny Strong, and Michael Mayer will direct; Mayer announced the Broadway plans in Miami at a Broadway Across America conference, where a presentation of songs was introduced by Mae Jemison.
The project has been in development for more than a dozen years and had a 2024 production at Berkeley Repertory Theater. Reviews there generally praised the performances but raised concerns about the storytelling, and the creative team plans to continue reworking the material over the next nine months.
