Kotaku, as part of its Backlog Week, asked readers which games are forever trapped in their backlogs and why.

The piece notes backlogs vary widely but often include at least one title people never finish. The author gives two personal examples: Cyberpunk 2077 and Daggerfall. They say they’ve tried Cyberpunk 2077 three times, getting about two to three hours in before the game goes fully "open world" and they lose interest, describing the city as feeling "lifeless and dull" and finding exploration and quests boring; the author also notes trusted acquaintances adore the game and have replayed it, yet they “can’t even get past the opening hours” and add, "Perhaps I’ll never cross this one off my list."

On Daggerfall, the author—an Elder Scrolls fan who started with Morrowind—says every attempt to play, even using the Unity port, falters because of the older mechanics, menus and design, though they acknowledge others find it special and they want to experience it; despite trying a few times in recent years, they still haven’t. Readers were invited to name the games that remain stuck on their own backlogs in the comments and explain why.
