Garry Newman, creator of Garry's Mod and CEO of Facepunch Studios, spoke at GDC with Chris Livingston about the studio's history, Rust and its upcoming game-creation platform s&box, which will carry a similar price tag to Garry's Mod. Despite the popularity of its projects, Facepunch remains independent.

Newman revealed that companies have tried to buy Facepunch. "Just before we came out with Rust, we were, what's the word? Propositioned, we were propositioned. By a company close to us, but it weren't enough money, like we considered it, but it didn't offer us enough money," he said.

He explained that the studio's focus is on enabling creators rather than chasing huge profits. When Rust added skins, the community earned from them and some people built careers; s&box is intended to be self-sustaining so others can do the same. Facepunch has said it will make s&box open source and has opened up its finances.
