Gov. Gavin Newsom of California said he was denied entry to an American venue at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and his scheduled speaking engagement there was canceled, a spokesman for the governor said. Mr. Newsom had been scheduled for a one-on-one "fireside chat" with an editor for Fortune at USA House, where California's economy, on its own, is the fourth largest in the world.

His team said they were turned away at a security check a few hours before the event and were told that "a venue-level decision" had been made to "not include an elected U.S. official" in the evening's program. On social media Mr. Newsom wrote, "How weak and pathetic do you have to be to be this scared of a fireside chat?" White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly did not answer whether Mr.

Newsom had been prohibited from entering USA House and used a pejorative misstatement of his name, saying, "No one in Davos knows who third-rate governor Newscum is or why he is frolicking around Switzerland instead of fixing the many problems he created in California." Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called Mr.

Newsom "smug," "self-absorbed" and "economically illiterate," and suggested the governor's appearance might be affected, saying, "I was told he was asked to give a speech on his signature policies, but he's not speaking because what have his economic policies brought?" The episode followed Mr.
