Gecqua could end the water starter curse in Pokemon Winds and Waves
Water-type starters have long gotten the short end of the stick in new Pokémon generations, with fire and grass companions often taking the spotlight. Quaxly drew some interest in Scarlet and Violet but was outshone by Sprigatito, and earlier starters such as Sobble, Popplio, Oshawott and Piplup each faced their own uphill battles among fans.
Mudkip remains the rare water starter to inspire widespread devotion, and that was more than two decades ago. Gecqua, the water gecko introduced for Pokémon Winds and Waves, might change that. Fans are already comparing it favorably to Sobble, speculating about real-world inspirations like the fat-tailed gecko and wondering how its evolution line will play out.
Above all, observers agree on one point: the design is striking. Its round, cherubic features draw attention to a disproportionately large head and enormous periwinkle eyes set against a steel-blue body.
