Apple and Google announced a multi-year partnership in which Google's Gemini models and cloud technology will power Apple Intelligence features, most notably a more advanced and more personalized Siri, the companies said in a joint statement. In the statement, Apple referred to Google's AI as "the most capable platform for Apple Foundation Models" and said the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Gemini models and Google's cloud technology.

The plan is to use Gemini on the backend while relying on Apple's local models and its Private Cloud Compute service to keep conversations secure on device. Gemini is expected to let Siri behave more like an advanced chatbot, using large language models for more natural conversations.

Specific features named in reports include App Intents to work with Apple and third-party apps, "personal context knowledge" to act on device data and preferences, on-screen awareness to work with what is shown on screen, and "World Knowledge Answers" to search the web for responses.

Apple has struggled to build its own advanced LLMs and has relied on other tools such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Siri has long been criticized for errors and misunderstandings.
