Gerard Butler’s Den of Thieves 2 is finding streaming success
Gerard Butler faced criticism this year after the poor reception and box office showing of Greenland 2: Migration, which failed to gross even half its break-even point. He still has projects ahead, including the live-action How to Train Your Dragon sequel now in production for a 2027 release and the upcoming third installment of his Den of Thieves franchise, for which co-star O’Shea Jackson Jr.
is bulking up. Last year Butler returned to his signature role as Big Nick O’Brien in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. The first Den of Thieves movie grossed $80 million on a $30 million budget; its sequel earned $58 million against a $40 million budget, making it a much less profitable endeavor.
The sequel found redemption on streaming, landing in Prime Video’s top 10 in several countries and remaining on Netflix in America a few months after leaving theaters—just like the original. Christian Gudegast wrote and directed Den of Thieves 2.
