Glean aims to be the intelligence layer beneath enterprise AI

The battle for enterprise AI is intensifying as Microsoft bundles Copilot into Office, Google pushes Gemini into Workspace, and firms like OpenAI and Anthropic sell directly to companies. With every SaaS vendor shipping an AI assistant, Glean is focusing on a less visible play: building the intelligence layer beneath the interface.

Seven years after it set out to be the Google for enterprise—indexing and searching across tools from Slack to Jira and Google Drive to Salesforce—the company has shifted from crafting a better chatbot to acting as connective tissue between models and enterprise systems.

The Glean Assistant is often the entry point, a chat interface powered by a mix of leading proprietary models (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) and open-source alternatives, grounded in a company’s internal data. What keeps customers, the company says, is the infrastructure beneath that chat window.
