In recent years Glen Powell has felt inescapable, whether holding his own with Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick, sparking chemistry with Sydney Sweeney in Anyone But You, or standing out in Twisters. On the small screen, the Netflix movie Hit Man and the Hulu series Chad Powers helped reinforce his appeal, and he has the new movie How to Make a Killing hitting theaters this weekend.

Horror fans, however, had seen his potential earlier. In 2015, Ryan Murphy shifted from American Horror Story to Scream Queens, a self-referential slasher on Fox that played up satire and black comedy while unfolding as a college murder-mystery. Powell played Chad Radwell, a hyper-masculine, narcissistic character whose idiotic lines required authenticity to land; he managed to be charming even as a role you love to hate.

He stood out among a cast that included Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, Keke Palmer, Billie Lourd and Abigail Breslin.
