Gov. Glenn Youngkin of Virginia said on Sunday that Vice President JD Vance would be a "great, great presidential nominee," joining other prominent Republicans who have pointed to Mr. Vance as a likely 2028 contender and a successor to President Trump.

Mr. Youngkin, whose term ends in less than a week, made the remarks in an interview on Fox News Sunday and said, "I agree with President Trump, I agree with Marco Rubio: I think Vice President Vance would be a great nominee." He sidestepped questions about whether he himself plans to run for president in 2028.

As Republicans contemplate a post-Trump era, some have begun lining up behind Mr. Vance. The article noted that Senator Marco Rubio has praised Mr. Vance and that Erika Kirk, widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, endorsed Mr. Vance at a Turning Point USA event, saying she would help "get my husband's friend JD Vance elected for 48 in the most resounding way possible."

Still, the glowing endorsements do not rule out future campaigns against Mr. Vance, and Republicans may be hesitant to appear to undermine Mr. Trump. When pressed twice by Fox News interviewer Jacqui Heinrich about a White House bid, Mr. Youngkin declined a direct answer, saying, "As I’ve said, I’m finishing," and urging that the focus remain on "the here and now."
