Sony Pictures Animation released GOAT last February. The film uses a barnyard animal as a surrogate for NBA superstar Steph Curry and plays on the GOAT acronym — "Greatest of All Time." While not a reboot or sequel, its family-friendly appeal helped it reach $75.9 million domestically and $132.4 million globally, and it has now overcome Rocky's domestic run of $117.2.

Rocky remains one of the quintessential underdog stories, with Sylvester Stallone as an amateur boxer who earns a title shot against Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). The original film became the first sports-inspired movie to win Best Picture at the Oscars and also took home awards for Best Director and Best Editing.

It spawned four sequels, and later entries saw mixed reactions until the franchise was reborn with Creed, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan. Creed earned strong reviews—95% on Rotten Tomatoes versus the original's 93%—and Creed III ultimately became the franchise's top box-office performer at $273.7 million worldwide.
