Graham Norton’s red-sofa formula makes every episode work
In a report from Collider, Graham Stuart, the show’s long-time producing partner, explained how The Graham Norton Show’s red sofa is carefully engineered for chemistry. He called seat 1 a “big-ticket item,” with publicists fighting to secure it because it guarantees the most camera time, the most direct interaction with Norton, and the clearest opportunity to guide the conversation; in the current 2025–2026 season Taylor Swift, Julia Roberts, Emma Thompson, and Hugh Jackman have all sat in seat 1.
Stuart said that once the first placement is confirmed the hierarchy largely disappears and the remaining guests are arranged for chemistry rather than status. The middle seats are based on banter potential and are paired to create contrast, charisma and storytelling moments, with Season 33 combinations including Emily Blunt with Matthew McConaughey, Ben Stiller with Kate Hudson, and Timothée Chalamet with Rowan Atkinson.
