Grant Morrison Questions James Gunn’s Portrayal of Superman
When James Gunn began his DCU, he pointed to Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's All-Star Superman as an influence. Morrison praised the 2025 Superman film as the "best Superman movie yet," but said he still had reservations about some of Gunn's choices. Morrison told Half the Picture he was uneasy with how often Superman was shown being beaten without fighting back, even while accepting the dramatic intent.
"It became the closest to capturing what Superman feels like. I had a few things I didn't like about it. [James] made specific choices that I think were made for dramatic reasons that were understandable...in order to make him seem more relatable, he had him getting beaten up an awful lot.
I want to see him stop getting beaten up and fight back." He also took issue with the decision to have Jor-El and Lara send Superman to "conquer" the Earth.
