Greenland song 'Greenland Belongs to Greenlanders' becomes protest anthem
A new pro-Greenland song, "Greenland Belongs to Greenlanders," has become a protest anthem in Nuuk, blaring from loudspeakers at a recent demonstration against President Trump’s gestures toward annexing the territory. The tune began in January 2025 as a melody by two friends in Nuuk, Glenn Moller, a full-time musician, and Steffen Lynge, a police officer who plays guitar.
They asked Siiva Fleischer, a leading Greenlandic singer-songwriter, to provide lyrics and vocals. Fleischer declined to be interviewed for this article but told the Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq, "While the threats of attack or purchase of our country have been ongoing, it has never been more important that we stand together." The track, titled in Greenlandic "Kalaallit Nunaat, Kalaallit Pigaat," drew on lines written by Fleischer including: "Let us stand together here in our land / We protect what we love / In the land of hope for us all / We rise and shout aloud." The song was released on streaming platforms on Jan.
11 and was played at the Nuuk protest, where many of the thousands gathered sang along with the chorus.
