GTA Wiki Leaves Fandom Over Ads and Censorship
The largest community-created Grand Theft Auto wiki has left Fandom and relaunched on a new domain, gta.wiki. Editors moved more than 20,000 articles to the independent site on March 16, bringing content under their control and removing many of the ads and intrusive videos that had cluttered pages.
They pointed to Fandom’s aggressive advertising—a particular problem for the 60%+ of visitors who browse logged-out on mobile—and to large videos that began appearing at the top of articles in 2017. The editors also criticized Fandom’s Communication Creation Policy, saying tightened rules on offensive language and graphic media sometimes affected images of in-game adverts and audio clips of character quotes, and that restrictions on customization forced the removal of the site’s iconic middle-finger cursor.
This departure follows a broader trend of fan communities leaving Fandom: the Minecraft, Balatro and League of Legends wikis have made similar moves.
