Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola criticised VAR inconsistencies after his side’s 2-0 Carabao Cup semi-final win over Newcastle at St James’ Park, the Independent.co reported.

The visitors had a goal controversially chalked off in the second half when Semenyo struck for a second time from a corner, but a lengthy VAR review deemed Erling Haaland to have been offside and impeding defender Malick Thiaw. City took the advantage in the first leg after Antoine Semenyo scored his second goal in as many games and Rayan Cherki wrapped up victory at the death.

Guardiola questioned why VAR did not intervene in earlier incidents, citing a penalty for Fabian Schar on Phil Foden and an alleged handball against Jeremy Doku, and said he expected Howard Webb to call him "tomorrow" for explanations. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said the trip to the Etihad in February will be "probably our biggest challenge" and that his side have five more games to play before the second leg.
