Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities: A Near-Perfect Horror Anthology
The horror anthology has seen a recent resurgence, and Guillermo del Toro delivered a near-perfect example with Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. Over eight episodes he assembles a top-tier cast and a slate of directors, and each episode stands on its own—making the series easy to jump into at any point.
Del Toro has said he drew heavy influence from Rod Serling's Night Gallery, recalling "incredibly vivid memories of the series, of the fear that enveloped me when I watched each episode: the fantastic opening featuring those wide-angle faces, distorted and grimacing; Gil Mellé's incredible music that created feelings of both fear and excitement; and Rod Serling's carefully phrased introductions of Tom Wright's horrific and dread-filled paintings that haunt my imagination to this day." The opening sequence even features del Toro delivering an introduction in a style reminiscent of Serling.
True to its name, Cabinet of Curiosities centers each story on a mysterious item.
