Guy Ritchie’s Fountain of Youth Was Underrated
Ever the industrious filmmaker, Guy Ritchie has been busier than ever in the 2020s. Regrettably, his recent fantasy adventure film, Fountain of Youth, was poorly received when it came out. Made for Apple TV, the film follows estranged siblings Luke (John Krasinski), a roguish archeologist, and Charlotte (Natalie Portman), a museum curator, who are reunited by a dying billionaire to locate the legendary spring of immortality, embarking on a globetrotting quest that pits them against Interpol and a secret society known as "Protectors" and takes them to the Great Pyramids of Giza.
Calling Fountain of Youth’s critical reception poor would be an understatement: the movie has a dismal 35% score on Rotten Tomatoes, a Popcornmeter rating of 38%, and a 5.7/10 on IMDb, while Natalie Portman received a Razzie nomination for Worst Actress. At the same time, the film performed extremely well on Apple TV, reaching the top of the streaming service’s charts in August and outpacing high-profile releases such as The Gorge and Echo Valley.
