Harry and Meghan's Netflix projects stall, first-look deal uncertain
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s remaining Netflix projects appear to be stalled, putting their first-look deal with the streamer in doubt. Archwell Productions announced a movie based on Carley Fortune’s "Meet Me at the Lake" after Netflix paid around $3 million for the rights, but the project remains listed as in development and lacks both a director and a cast.
An adaptation of Jasmine Guillory’s "The Wedding Date" is likewise still classed as in development, and Markle’s lifestyle series "With Love, Meghan" has not been recommissioned for a third season amid falling ratings. The couple also debuted a documentary called "Cookie Queen" at Sundance; despite positive notices, it has not yet been picked up by a distributor or streamer.
First-look deals give a studio the right of first refusal on a producer’s projects in exchange for a retainer and further payment when a project sells, but it is not known how long the Sussexes’ agreement lasts.
