Harry Styles released his fourth solo album, "Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally," on Friday. Rather than leaning into his fame, he has been presenting himself as an ordinary person, and that decision undercuts the music: this is his most anonymous work yet.

Styles has embraced the everyday in his public life, from running the Berlin Marathon in sunglasses and a long-sleeved shirt under a pseudonym to attending concerts incognito across Europe, including LCD Soundsystem in Madrid and Radiohead in Berlin. He told BBC Radio 1's Greg James that he wanted to get on the other side of the audience experience and told Apple Music's Zane Lowe that being an "ordinary person" is central to his self-image.

The album is a triumph of production more than personality.
