Havertz penalty rescues draw as Madueke sparks Arsenal
Arsenal left it late to salvage a 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg at the BayArena as Kai Havertz, back against his former club, converted from the penalty spot after Robert Andrich had given the hosts the lead. The Germany international's spot-kick earned a result that their overall performance barely deserved.
Arsenal made a strong start but chances were scarce in the opening 45 minutes. Gabriel Martinelli came closest when a fine team move ended with him crashing an effort off the crossbar. The hosts struck immediately after the break when Leverkusen moved the ball forward from kick-off and Martin Terrier forced David Raya into a save; Andrich then headed in from the resulting corner.
Arsenal spent much of the second half in the Leverkusen half but struggled to test Janis Blaswich, with Jurrien Timber heading over from close range before substitutes changed the game.
