HBO adapted Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects into an eight-part series directed by the late Jean-Marc Vallée and anchored by Amy Adams as Camille Preaker. Adams’ portrayal may be the single best performance she’s ever given, conveying Camille’s turmoil through physical detail rather than exposition.

The plot follows Camille’s return to Wind Gap, Missouri, where she is assigned to investigate the murder of a teenage girl while managing a strained relationship with her mother, Adora Crellin (Patricia Clarkson). The case reawakens traumatic memories and reveals a fraught family dynamic, including Camille’s half-sister Amma (Eliza Scanlen), whose bullying echoes Camille’s own past.

Chris Messina appears as Detective Richard Wilson, an outsider learning to navigate the town’s hostile culture. The series visualizes Camille’s interior life with a Gothic atmosphere and frequent flashbacks, with Sophia Lillis portraying the younger Camille.
